If you’re anything like me, having the munchies usually leads to binge eating junk food. Pizza, burritos, fried chicken, cookies, chips, you name it. However, having the munchies doesn’t have to ruin your diet. Here are some low-calorie snack ideas for when you’re munching out!

Popcorn

Popcorn is high in fiber and contains less calories than a bag of chips! I love to make fresh popped popcorn with my popcorn maker, but microwaveable is great if I’m feeling lazy. There are many pre-popped options as well. However, avoid options high sugar as they can be high in calories. Use coconut oil or olive oil as an alternative to butter and add seasonings to flavor. I use spices like rosemary, dill, lemon pepper, as well as traditional popcorn flavoring like salt and vinegar, ketchup, and dill pickle.

Apples and Peanut Butter

Apples are rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber. Pair with a natural peanut butter; the only ingredient should be peanuts; avoid the butters high in sugars as they can be high in calories. Nut butters like almond butter and cashew are great alternatives. The fiber in the apple and protein and fats in the nut butter keeps you feeling full longer. Nut butters are also rich in nutrients like potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin B6. Other kinds of fresh fruits are great for munching on. Pears, oranges, clementine’s, grapes are all excellent options that are full of fiber vitamins, and nutrients.

Frozen Chocolate Bananas

These are super easy-to-make low calories treats that help to tame any sweet tooth! To make them start by peeling your bananas and inserting popsicle sticks. Cover each piece with melted milk chocolate (use dark chocolate for less calories), roll in chopped up almonds, peanuts, or coconut to add texture and flavour. They take about two hours to freeze and will keep for about two weeks.

Toasted Chickpeas

This is a great snack when you’re craving chips but want something healthier. They’re great on their own, but also delicious on top of a salad. Whisk olive oil with seasoning of your choice. I recommend mixing salt, pepper, cumin, garlic powder, and chili powder. Mix seasoned oil and chickpeas – toss to coat. Spread into a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast in a 350-degree preheated oven, stirring occasionally, until nicely browned and slightly crispy for about 45 minutes.

Yogurt Parfait

I don’t know about you, but when I have the munchies, I want something I can make quickly. Yogurt parfaits are simple and delicious. Ingredients include: granola, Greek yogurt, and fresh berries. The Greek yogurt is high in protein, berries are high in nutrients and antioxidants, while the granola helps you stay full longer.
